Alexandra Phillips, Green MEP for the South East of England, spoke today in the European Parliament, condemning the rise in LGBT+ related Hate Crime across Europe.
Alexandra Phillips, MEP, spoke today, to join in condemnation of moves across Poland to declare ‘LGBT-free' zones.
Since the beginning of 2019, 87 localities (regions, counties and municipalities) have passed bills or have declared themselves “LGBTI-free” or “free of LGBT ideology” in Poland.
Alexandra linked this deeply shocking legislation to the rise of hate-crime against LGBT+ people across Europe, and in the U.K.
She said: "this dangerous discrimination is not just consigned to Poland; in the UK, the number of hate crimes reported to police has more than doubled since 2013."
"In a politics where trust has dissolved, and political leaders in my own country describe members of the LGBT community as ‘tank-topped bum-boys’ - the political establishment are giving the green light to acts of hate and evil, which can ruin lives and lead ultimately to death.”
"Make no mistake, this is the insidious resurgence of the right. // We must unite to oppose hate in all of its forms and call it out in the politics in all our countries.”
